The customized CNN model can predict the roasting degrees of coffee bean images. In the AI process, the roasting degree can be correctly predicted even though the image of coffee bean is rotated or shifted.
AI Chip Acceleration
Richeon applies the AI chip (KL520 from Kneron) to accelerates the machine learning model. KL520 can reduce the consumption of computation and power with certain accuracy. It compresses the AI model in hardware, making the AI edge computing practicle.
Average Mode
With the LCD of RTRDM, the user can focus on the correct image with only coffee beans and press a simple button to predict the roast degree. This situation can fulfill the need of offline roast degree measurement. The advantage of RTRDM is the average mode of measurement. User can press the measure button and move the roast degree meter along the desired region of coffee beans and then repress the button to stop measuring. RTRDM will calculate the average roast degree of the coffee beans in the measured region. This is a flexible and novel function in roast degree measurement.
Real-time Display and Measure
When holding RTRDM in front of the viewing window of coffee bean roaster, the real-time roast degree can be measured during the roasting process. An example plot of raw data is shown below. We measured the coffee bean through RTRDM in real-time mode with bean temperature toward 208 °C. The RTRDM is held by hand and the raw data is not filtered, so the curve is not quite smooth. However, the trend of roast degree can be seen in this figure.
Different from the coffee analyzer on the market using infrared measurement (the roast degree depends on temperature), the RTRDM from Richeon can measure the roasting coffee beans even the heating process is not finished. Therefore, the coffee roaster can get a reference for the current state of the coffee beans, and then decides the roasting time. Whether taking out the coffee beans with a sampling stick or measure directly through the viewing window is possible. RTRDM can measure the roasting degree of coffee beans with high temperature, which is a novel and flexible product.
